Things To Look For in a Coastal Event Space

Beach weddings and events are the stuff of dreams—but there are a few important factors to consider before you book one. Careful planning can help keep your special day from becoming a logistical or weather-induced nightmare. Here are some key things to look for as you compare beach wedding venues and other kinds of event spaces.

  • Easy beach access. If your heart is set on a beach wedding or event, make sure you’ll have fuss-free access to the real stars of the show: the sand and surf. Not only will this allow everyone to move about freely and kick up (or off) their shoes, but it will make it easier for professional and impromptu photographers to get great shots. Make sure that any guests who are elderly, injured, or have a disability can get around comfortably.

  • Basic amenities. Regardless of the event you’re having, find out whether guests will have access to restrooms, seating, trash disposal, and dining and beverage options. Make sure all available amenities will be plentiful enough to accommodate your entire guest list. For weddings, find out whether there is private space available for the bride, groom, and wedding party.

  • Compliance with beach laws and permit requirements. Be aware of local and state regulations, which determine whether vehicles, alcohol, fireworks, or bonfires are allowed on the beach, and whether lifeguards will be present. Some municipalities may require you to acquire a permit to host a private beach event, or may disallow private events on holidays. Match up your venue’s offerings and availability accordingly.

  • Shade. If you’re planning for an idyllic, warm, sunny beach wedding or event, go ahead and book that midday or afternoon time slot—but be sure that you and your guests can escape the UV rays and heat as needed. Plan for a canopy tent on the sand oriented to offer maximum shade, or book an beach-adjacent indoor venue with plenty of window shades.

  • Shelter. Be sure to book a venue with enough indoor or tented space and seating to accommodate all of your guests in case of inclement weather or very high tides. You can minimize the risk of losing beach space to the ocean by choosing an event time that will coincide with any low tide or neap tide week and by choosing a beach large enough to accommodate your party.
